When it comes to thermal resilience, Junction Field-Effect Transistors (FETs) outshine Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs). Not only are they thermally more robust, but they also tend to be smaller in size, making them an ideal choice for integrated-circuit (IC) chip design. This article will delve into the world of FETs and explore their unique characteristics, advantages, and differences with BJTs.

One of the primary benefits of FETs is their high input impedance. Unlike BJTs, which have a relatively low input resistance, FETs can withstand varying input signals without compromising their performance. This is because FETs operate on the principle of electric fields, where an electric field is created by existing charges that influence the conduction path of the output circuit without direct physical contact.

The term 'field-effect' can be understood by drawing a parallel with magnets and metal filings. Just as a permanent magnet attracts metal filings without physical contact, FETs control the flow of current through an electric field. In contrast, BJTs rely on the interaction between two charge carriers – electrons and holes – making them bipolar devices.
